Introducing the AR5 Acoustic Recorder

Built by Alato, the AR5 follows the same trusted design as the AR4, previously produced by the Department of Conservation (DOC).

With DOC stopping production, Alato are stepping in to ensure seamless continuity and introduce innovative advancements.

The AR5 is built to the same specifications as the AR4, providing the reliability and consistency you expect for monitoring wildlife in the harsh New Zealand environment.

Frequently asked questions

How is the AR5 Different from the AR4?
The AR5 is the first unit produced by Alato as we replace DOC's AR4 production. In speaking to customers we heard the same thing many times - "consistency is important". As such, the AR5 has some small design and production changes but ultimately provides a consistent user experience and data so that multi-year surveys can continue without interruption or inconsistent results.
What changes can we expect to see in the future?
We are dedicated to building the best hardware and software we can. Our goal is to continue to work closely with NZ ecologists to understand their challenges and build solutions for them. We have already started planning iterations that will make the AR5 devices easier to use. We expect these to roll out in mid-2025.
Will you support the AR4 Units
We plan to work closely with DOC in the coming weeks to come up with the best way to help support you if you have AR4 units in need of a spruce up.
Who are Alato?

When will the AR5 be ready?
The new AR5 units are in production now with an expected delivery date of 15 January 2025.
